THE MAJOR AREAS OF BENEFIT THAT THE FUTURE GROWTH IN THE IT INDUSTRY CAN GENERATE FOR THE INDIAN

EXPORTS

The IT industry accounts for a major share in the exports from India. This is expected to grow further in coming years. The information technology industry is one of the major sources of foreign currency for India.

EMPLOYMENT

The biggest benefit of the IT industry is the huge employment it generates. For a developing country like India, with a huge population, the high rate of employment in the IT sector is a big advantage.

FDI (FOREGIN DIRECT INVESTMENT)

High inflow of FDI in the IT sector is expected to continue in coming years. The inflow of huge volumes of FDI in the IT industry of India has not only boosted the industry but the entire Indian economy in recent years. Sectors such as Communications and Media, Financial Services and Healthcare are too expected to ride the next wave of growth in IT. Moreover, even the public sector is undergoing a significant infrastructure revamp. Due to the need of modernization in banks and government offices the government itself has taken the lead in promoting IT education in India by introducing computers as a mainstream subject in schools and colleges. Some state governments, like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, have mandated laptops for all school children.

Considering the demand, the supply of skilled professionals is quite a wide-open door.

According to a study by National Skill Development Corporation, IT/ITES together would require a total of 1.15 crore people by 2022 only in the organized sector.

70% to 80% would be required in the entry and mid-level streams.

Based on the trends, intensive skill-building effort is required to ensure constant supply of skilled manpower is available for growth of the country.

India would witness an incremental demand of 1.1 mn additional computer hardware professionals by 2012 and around 5.6 million by 2020.
